How Gold Loans Work in India: A Simple Guide
By SonaFin Editorial Team · · 6 min read

In short: A gold loan is a secured loan: you pledge gold jewellery, the lender lends a share of its value, and you get the gold back after repaying principal and interest. Rates are usually lower than unsecured loans.
What happens when you take a gold loan
You bring ornaments to a bank or NBFC, where the lender tests the purity and weighs the gold. The lender then offers a loan amount based on the gold’s value and its loan-to-value limit. Once you accept and complete KYC, the gold is sealed and stored while the loan is active.
Because the loan is secured by gold, lenders do not rely on your income documents or credit history the way they do for personal loans. That is why approval and disbursal are usually fast.
What decides your interest rate and loan amount
Three things matter most: the purity and weight of your gold, the lender’s per gram rate, and the loan-to-value ratio the lender applies. The interest rate then depends on the lender, the loan amount and the tenure you choose.
Headline interest rates are only part of the cost. Processing fees, valuation charges, foreclosure terms and penalties can change what you actually pay, so compare the full cost rather than the advertised rate.
How repayment and getting your gold back work
Lenders typically offer EMI, monthly interest with principal at the end, or a single bullet payment. When the loan is closed in full, the lender returns the same pledged items. If you cannot repay on time, the lender can recover dues by auctioning the gold after giving notice, which is why choosing a repayment plan you can sustain matters.
